Louis L'Amount Knows About His Subjects

Smoke From This Altar by Louis L'Amour, Oklahoma City: Lusk Publishing Company. $1.50.

I have been watching the work of Louis L'Amour for a long time, ever since I first met him; and I don't remember when, where or how that was. What struck me first was his delight in and love for words; and what struck me next was his industry. He has that infinite capacity for taking pains, which Carlyle, I believe it was, gave as a definition of genius. And he has the ability to take punishment which only a trained fighter (which he is along with all his other accomplishments) could stand. By which I mean to imply that he will be heard from in a big way one of these days.

For it has the the three things which it takes to make a writer; a love for words, industry and something to say. He has been around. Born in North Dakota, he set out at the age of 15 to see the world.  He has seen a lot of it. Japan, China, Borneo, Java, New Guinea, India, Arabia, Egypt and South and Central America. He made his way by working, as miner, lumberjack, seaman, deep-sea diver, prize-fighter, sideshow barker, actor, editor, reporter. For the last six or eight years he has lived in Oklahoma. He has seen many men of many kinds in these occupations - and he has found something to love, pity, admire, in all of them. Which takes the limit off his human sympathies and his range of interests.

Since I have known him he has written three novels - and has had the courage to abandon at least two of them, because he did not think they were good enough. And that is another mark of an author who can not fail to succeed. Most young writers fall in love with their own work and fail to treat it rough enough. And his short stories have appeared in a dozen or more of the national magazines.

Well, here is a collection of fifty or more poems built on themes gathered from the far ends of the earth or from his back yard...echoing the cadences of the sonnet which fit extremely well with sad and wistful longing. Like this:

The harbor lights are shining from the bay
Like golden daggers in the heart of night,
and
The stars go out like candles in a gale
From Interlude: Hongkong Harbor.

....Louis L'Amour has a lot of these in the heart... K. C. K. [Kenneth C. Kaufman]
