MORNING GLORY VINES

Morning Glory (Ipomoea) is a very fast growing annual vine, which comes in blue, pink, purple, scarlet, white and multicolored trumpet-shaped blooms. The flowers attract hummingbirds, bees, ladybugs and butterflies.

The Morning Glory is a showy cheery, colorful mixture of  flowers that will brighten any garden.

They are called morning glory because the blooms open in the cool of the morning. During the fall, flowers open all day. They usually bloom from summer until fall frost. The vines die with a winter freeze, but will reseed themselves each year. This excellent vine will cover fences, arbors, porches, banks, steep hills, or trellises.  My 70ish year old Mother still plants them at the bottom of her Redbud trees and lets then wind through the branches. ;) Also a great addition to a hanging basket or window box. Can also be grown as ground cover or in pots.

Morning glory vines grow very fast, reaching 10 feet or more two months after seeds sprout, and they will climb on just about any support. Profusely flowering against a background of pale green foliage, they quickly form lovely hedges or screens. The vines are sometimes used as a temporary ground cover, and do well in hanging baskets and containers. They should be planted in full sun and need a soil that is not too fertile or moist to prevent the production of leaves instead of flowers.

Blue Morning Glory -- OUT OF STOCK 04-01-2009

Heavenly Blue Morning Glory is a breathtakingly beautiful sky blue trumpet with white throat. Trumpets are about 4-6" across.

After all danger of frost is past, sow the seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep, 8 to 12 inches apart, and provide a support of twine, wire or a fence, tree or trellis for the vine to climb on. Or start seeds indoors in individual 3-inch peat pots four to six weeks before the last frost is due and set the pots into the garden when you can be sure seedlings will not be nipped by a late frost. Success is unlikely if the seeds are started in flats because morning glories resent transplanting. Prior to sowing, the seeds should either be scarified (slightly nicked with a file) or soaked overnight in room temperature water to soften the hull.

I have these gorgeous plants in my yard and get to enjoy them and I want you to also.  There's nothing like getting up on a dewy spring morning and sitting on my back porch having a cup of coffee and hearing all the birds tweeting and witnessing the unbelievably colorful hummingbirds and butterflies on my Hummingbird & Morning Glory vines. You can turn your backyard into a scenic wonderland, too!!
