Originally named Sweeny after E. W. Sweeney who started a business operating a ferry across the North Canadian River, the post office name changed to Harrah, December 22, 1898.Named after Frank Harrah, local merchant and business leader.

Louis Navarre first came to the area in the early 1870s on a hunting expedition. He returned in 1889 and established a residence. He later sold a portion of that property to Frank Harrah.
